Uber in Cancún
Uber in Cancún: Uber started operations in Cancún in late 2016, amid strong opposition from local taxi trade unions. By the end of 2017, Uber (whose customer base there grew to 300,000 passengers) temporarily suspended its service in Cancún, due to problem it had with local officials (including being barred from accepting cash from its customers). However, latter Mexican court rulings declared that Uber is a private service and cannot be regulated the same way as traditional taxis are. In June 2019, Uber Mexico announced its resumption of service in Cancún, which is good news for visitors. Nearly two thirds of Uber’s customers were travelers.
