It is an ancient Mayan city of the classical period. At present it is one of the most important archaeological sites of the Mayan culture, along with those of Chichén Itzá and Tikal. It is located in the municipality of Santa Elena in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. It is located in the so-called Puuc zone and is the most representative city of this architectural style.
