Ruinas de Palenque Chiapas
One of the most outstanding archaeological remains of Mayan origin is found in Palenque, which was one of the four most important capitals of the Empire. This important monument of Mexico is spread out across 17 km2 with more than 1500 buildings.
Located in the current state of Chiapas, Palenque was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. The discoveries of the area reveal deep artistic, scientific and mythological concerns of the Mayan civilization. In most of the constructions there are extensive hieroglyphics that reconstruct the great events like marriages, wars and exploits of important personages.
Among the most important monuments are the Temple of the Inscriptions; the Palace a set of buildings connected to each other; the set of Las Cruces, constituted by the Temple of the Cross, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Foliated Cross, all built on stepped pyramids; the aqueduct; the Temple of the lion; the Temple of the Count and the ball game court.
